Dear BABC Members,
The BABC of Greater Philadelphia has been hard at work during the summer months. By now you should have received the 2011-2012 BABC Annual Membership Directory 20th Anniversary Edition; an electronic invitation to follow the BABC of Greater Philadelphia on LinkedIn; and the 2011 UK Trade & Investment for Growth publication. If you have not already done so, please friend us on Facebook, connect with us on LinkedIn, and follow the BABC on our social media sites to stay abreast of the latest business trends and issues affecting trade and investment on both sides of the Atlantic, and to learn about upcoming BABC events and programs.
We have an exciting line-up of events in store for you during the next several months, including a business roundtable seminar about the digital economy on October 5, 2011, and our 20th anniversary/annual holiday luncheon on December 14, 2011. Introduction: New Consul-General, Danny Lopez
British Consul-General, New York and Director-General, Trade & Investment USA
Danny was appointed British Consul-General, New York in July 2011 and has responsibility for promoting the UK's economic, foreign policy and national security priorities. Danny is on the Board of UK Trade & Investment, the economic development agency for the British Government, and leads its operations across the USA.
Prior to joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Danny enjoyed a varied career in the UK's public and private sectors. From 2009 to 2011, Danny worked for the London Development Agency, the Mayor of London's economic development arm, as Group Director for Business Support and Promotion. During this time Danny was responsible for creating 'London & Partners', the UK capital's promotional agency for business, visitors and students and was its inaugural CEO. read more

With risk appetite in the panic zone, policy response is key

The stakes could hardly be higher at the moment. This is a market being driven by fear as much as hard facts. The failure of the political and monetary establishments to agree what needs to be done has had a massive impact on market sentiment, and risk appetite has fallen into the panic zone. But because there is little evidence to justify the swiftness of the sell-off, and because there is still a reasonable chance of a modest acceleration in growth in the second half of the year, we would not be surprised to see the markets stabilise in the next fortnight.
The speed of the market decline has been breathtaking, exacerbated by technical aspects within the derivatives market - namely the unwinding of volatility exposure. Nevertheless, the catalyst was anxiety about the creditworthiness of developed countries, given the implicit lack of political cohesion on both sides of the Atlantic. read more
