Message from the President

July 2011

Dear BABC Members and Friends,

I have served as President of the BABC of Greater Philadelphia for the last four years. During that time it has been a pleasure to work with you in support of our mission – promoting increased trade and investment between the UK and Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware. Today the UK is Pennsylvania’s fifth largest export market, with a 50% increase during the past year alone. The BABC itself has seen substantial membership growth, increased programming and strengthened financial stability. All of these have caused us to be a frequent example highlighted by the global organization of what a successful BABC chapter should strive to be.

It is my firm belief, however, that all organizations must continue to evolve and grow in order to be successful. An essential part of that evolution is a regular change in leadership. It is with that in mind, that I humbly write to let you know that I have decided to “retire” as President of the BABC. As with each President before me, I leave the organization in a stronger position than when I entered, and leave it in more capable hands. With such a wonderful board of directors, we had a wealth of capable leaders in our midst, and I am both honored and pleased to “pass the torch” to my friend and colleague Hope Krebs, Co-chair of the law firm Duane Morris’ International Practice Group.

Duane Morris has been a BABC member for approximately ten years, and Hope has actively represented Duane Morris as a BABC Board Member and Vice President of Membership since 2005. Serving as BABC Membership Chair, Hope has helped us build our membership base across all levels and industries. So I leave you not only in capable hands, but enthusiastic ones as well. Hope has great ideas about programming, how to stay connected with current members, and how to attract newcomers. She will provide the spark for our ongoing evolution and continued success.

As I reflect on the BABC, our success and strength is truly remarkable. Even amid unstable economic times, the BABC has always maintained a strong membership and has continued to provide valuable programs and networking events. Testament to you and our leadership, we are celebrating our 20th Anniversary this year.

Despite my “retirement,” I will continue to play an active role on the BABC’s Board of Directors, and look forward to seeing you at upcoming events and programs. This is not a goodbye, but rather a thank you for entrusting me with the leadership of this phenomenal organization, and for all of your support during the past years. Please join me in welcoming our new BABC President – Hope Krebs.
Sincerely,

Neil Boyden Tanner,
President, BABC of Greater Philadelphia

Feature Article: UK Budget 2011 and Plan for Growth

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

The UK Budget 2011 and Plan for Growth was set forth in a recently released white paper. Sir Alan Collins KCVO CMG Consul-General shared the document with the BABC of Greater Philadelphia and highlighted the British Government’s trade and investment strategy. The information is directly related to the theme of Sir Alan’s speech presented during the BABC 2010 Annual Holiday Luncheon, during which he provided an updated report on the key to UK trade and investment strategy — rejecting protectionism and ensuring a greater openness to trade and investment. The strategy includes 62 actions the UK will be pursuing to help secure a strong, sustainable and open economy that benefits business both domestically and internationally. The entire UK Budget 2011 and Plan for Growth document is permanently housed on the BABC of Greater Philadelphia website, and can be accessed via http://www.babcphiladelphia.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/UKTI-Trade-and-Growth-PDF.pdf. BABC Human Interest Feature

If you work in Philadelphia, you can leave work at 5:00 p.m. and have an authentic British meal without crossing the Atlantic by 6:00 p.m. Thanks to Philadelphia’s new restaurant, The Dandelion, you can be transported to England just by visiting this British inspired pub located at 124 South 18th Street, in Center City Philadelphia. Sitting in the restaurant you will be inspired and comforted by the creative décor. Most of the furniture and interior decoration was imported from England in two shipping containers at the cost of $3.5 million dollars. The objects include: a Victorian lantern over the door, wood-burning fireplaces, British ornaments and other items.

The Dandelion, Steven Starr’s 15th restaurant to open in Philadelphia received positive reception. Not only does the pub boast authentic décor, but the chef, Robert Aikens is British born and raised in Norfolk, England.

A Reception in Honor of Andrew Witty, Chief Executive Officer, GlaxoSmithKline PLC

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

On Wednesday, March 23, 2011, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia (BABC) hosted a reception for Andrew Witty, Chief Executive Officer of GlaxoSmithKline at Philadelphia’s City Hall in conjunction with the Honorable Mayor of Philadelphia, Michael A. Nutter; Oliver St. Clair Franklin, Honorary British Consul; and Select Greater Philadelphia. Immediately following a one-on-one meeting between Mr. Witty and Mayor Nutter, Mr. Witty and several of his colleagues shook hands and networked with reception attendees.

The intimate event at City Hall, attended by more than 80 leading executives and local and foreign officials was not without a stunning surprise announcement. After brief welcome remarks delivered by Oliver Franklin, Honorary British Consul; Neil Boyden Tanner, President, BABC; Thomas Morr, President, Select Greater Philadelphia; and Mayor Nutter, Mr. Witty was presented with a crystal Liberty Bell. The introductory comments focused on thanking Mr. Witty for GlaxoSmithKline’s commitment to the Philadelphia region and the company’s decision to move from Center City to the Navy Yard. Mr. Witty graciously accepted the Liberty Bell honor and while discussing the Company’s relationship with Philadelphia, surprised Mayor Nutter as well as everyone in the room by announcing a generous $5 million donation to the City of Philadelphia to “help the younger generation.”

News of the remarkable donation hit the wire immediately. Please follow these links for articles about the reception and GlaxoSmithKline’s $5 million donation.
