2011 BABC Transatlantic Conference

The British American Business Council chapter in Northern California will host the 18th annual British American Business Council Transatlantic Conference in San Francisco from May 11-13, 2011 at the Fairmont Hotel atop Nob Hill.

The conference theme for 2011 is the Impact of Innovation. Every aspect and consequence of innovation in business and social endeavors will be explored, with an elite group of senior business executives gathering to hear and meet with innovative leaders from both Bay Area and global businesses.

The panelists and keynote speakers will capture the components that breed innovation, from strategies for funding new ideas, finding human talent – both academic and industrial, to the tenacity of true entrepreneurs and the role of various service industries needed to build and foster innovation, including law, finance and marketing.

The conference will focus on The Impact of Innovation within a number of sectors on both sides of the Atlantic, including:

■ Technology – Aerospace, IT, Defence.
■ Biotech – Research, Novel Therapies, Medical Devices
■ The Environment – Auto Industry, Clean Technologies, Energy
■ Creative Industries – Social Media, Gaming, Social Networking Infrastructure
■ Finance – Venture Capital, Private Equity, Commercial Banking
■ Law – IP Protection, International Transactions, Environmental

Message from the President: An Important Year for the BABC of Greater Philadelphia

Happy New Year. It is with great pride that I continue to serve as President of this prestigious organization. As 2011 gets underway, the BABC will be launching fresh ideas, solidifying our plans for the year, and celebrating a very significant milestone.

Since 1991, the BABC has been promoting increased trade and investment between the UK and the Greater Philadelphia region. I am pleased to report we continue to make great strides in supporting and executing our mission. We consistently grow and produce engaging timely programs and events, even amid the challenges of the recent economic downturn. Our success would not be possible without solid member, Board and staff commitment and support.

I look forward to the exciting year ahead as we celebrate two decades of our region’s business commitment to and relationship with the UK. Please stay connected and learn more by reading our Winter Newsletter that speaks to our recent past and future endeavors.

Winter 2011 International Business Networking Reception featuring the Governor of Delaware, Jack Markell

On Thursday, February 3, 2011, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia joined several other international organizations for a business networking reception with the Governor of Delaware, Jack Markell. The program celebrated the success of the State of Delaware as a destination for international business. Over 200 guests, including leading figures from the international business and diplomatic communities in the Greater Philadelphia region gathered for this winter networking event at The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington. The international business networking event of the season was abuzz with the chatter of multi-lingual conversations and the consumption of delicious wine and food.

Governor Markell spoke about the importance of international trade and commerce in the State of Delaware, and his incentive program to attract business to the State. The Governor mentioned his specific interest in promoting UK investment in the region.

UK Clarifies Wide-Ranging Bribery Laws and the Impact on Non-UK Companies
On October 7, 2010, the UK Ministry of Justice clarified its draft guidance on the new UK anti-bribery legislation and how it is likely to be enforced. The Bribery Act 2010 (the “UK Bribery Act”), passed through the House of Commons in April 2010, received Royal Assent the same day and is now law. It will come into force in April 2011. The new legislation has been called the “toughest enforcement standard in the world.” Read the rest of this entry

On Wednesday, October 6, 2010 the BABC of Greater Philadelphia presented the Sixth “Building a Better Future” award luncheon at the Union League of Philadelphia. Graciously accepting the honors of the day were Gary Marshall, Head of the Americas, Aberdeen Asset Management PLC and Chief Executive Officer, Aberdeen Asset Management, Inc., and Ravi Saligram, Executive Vice President, ARAMARK Corporation and President, ARAMARK International and Chief Globalization Officer. Special guest included the Honorable Mayor of Philadelphia, Michael A.
